The Syrphini A large tribe of yellow spotted species with yellow scutellum (or black with yellow) and usually a yellow face. Exception is Melangyna quadrimaculatais. The males scutellum is black, the female is all black.

Many larger species are attractively marked, others are difficult to distinguish, such as the Sphaerophoria, where males are identified by their genitalia, and some females only if found mating with males. The predatory larvae of Sirphini often feed on aphids.
