Tabanidae (Horseflies & Clegs)
The majority of people
avoid these blood-sucking flies, but they are considered by
some
as beautiful. Many species have patterned wings and brightly
coloured eyes. The eye
markings (which fade soon after death), and the differing size
of eye facets, could be important as identification features.
There
are at least thirty British species in three tribes.
