The Eristalini (in the  sub-family Milesiinae)

The Eristalini are varied in colour and markings, some such as Helophilus spp. are wasp mimics, while the Eristalis spp. are bee mimics. The two Eristalinus are glossy black with an eye pattern unique amongst British hoverflies.

The larvae of the Eristalini live in water, breathing through a tube and are known as rat-tailed maggots.
